While I have been quite sceptical with southern Thailand, the north part of the country is a blast. The atmosphere is somehow different from the south and it seems that there is a lot to explore!
Ayutthaya was the capital of the kingdom of Siam and an international trading port from the 14th to the 18th century. It has been later destroyed by Burmese forces and only ruins remain from the old town.
The city is an absolute open-air museum with dozens of buddhist temples, palaces and monasteries (Worth visiting: Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Phra Ram, Wat Phu Khao Thong, Wat Chaiwatthanaram, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon and Wat Maha That). Renting a bicycle is a highly enjoyable way to get around the city and won’t take more than a day!
