The Gili Islands are located just off the northwest coast of Lombok. It is a complex of three paradisiac islands: Gili Trawagan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. While the scenery is quite similar accross the different islands, the atmosphere can be completely different. Gili Trawangan is a party island with cheap accomodations. It is therefore mainly dedicated to backpackers. Gili Meno is a honeymooners destination with expensive resorts and Gili Air is a blend of quietness and cheap accomodations.
I have decided to stay in Gili Air to enjoy a little bit more the local life of the island. Gili Air is insanely beautiful and the beach cleanliess is way above Asian standards. Expect white sands and turquoise waters on a number of beaches around the whole island. Since Gili Air is small, you can easily reach any part of the island within walking distance.
The real highlight of the Gili Islands is underwater. Grabe a mask and go snorkeling! The Southern East part of Gili Air is an incredible snorkeling spot for corals, turtles and fishes with incredible colors you do not even know exist! There is no need to go for a snorkeling tour unless you do not know how to swim. Boats are dropping off tourists 50 meters far from the beach. What a shame I don’t have a waterproof camera to photograph these magnificent creatures!
