Batad is a remote village located in Northern Luzon at 909m above sea level. It is a short 30-mintue jeepney ride from Banaue followed by a 15 minutes walk downhill to the village. Trishaw drivers will tell you that there is no jeepney in the morning but there is one leaving between 8.30am and 9am. Just wait for the jeepney in front of the ‘Stairway Hotel’ and wave at the driver to stop him.
In opposition to Banaue, the scenery is just amazingly breathtaking! The rice terraces of Batad are noted as a UNESCO Heritage Site. They easily rank amongst the most beautiful ones in Asia. The main viewpoint offer an incredible view on the whole valley. You can push a litlle further going to Cambulo village but the views are not as impressive as the ones of Batad. It’s a 8.6km return hike. The Tappia Falls is both massive and stunning!
Everything is doable on a big half day which means that it is not mandatory to stay in Batad overnight. I stayed overnight hoping to catch the sunrise and sunset. Truth is, the village is way too much embedded in the mountains for the light to reach it.
