Close your eyes for a second and imagine what the busiest and most vibrant city in the world would be like. Modern skyscrapers with a dynamic business life? Small shops with a slow pace local life? A countless number of cheap cuisines and fine dinings from all around the world? An energetic nightlife? A countless number of beaches and hikes within a fairly reachable distance from the city center? Hong Kong is all of these things. What an incredible city!
Under the Han dynasty, it is believed that the territory of Hong Kong was first occupied by the Chinese Empire between 206 BC and 220 AD. As trading started booming around the 7th century, Hong Kong played a key role in the maritime silk road between the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Macau, which is a nearby city of Hong Kong, was set up as an official trading place with Dutch, French and Portugese sailing over Southern China at the beginning of the 16th century. From the 18th century, China set up strict trading regulations to contain the influence of Foreigners. Britain attacked China in 1840 as part of the Opium War. A year later, China gave away Hong Kong Island to Britain.
As of July, 1st 1997, British handed over Hong Kong back to China. Hong Kong is now established as a special administrative region of China until 2047.
Travel-wise, Hong Kong is one of these cities where you could live for years and still make incredible discoveries. Just make the best out of your stay wandering in the different districts!
