The Gayasan National Park is located in the Southern part of South Korea. It is easily done on a day trip from Daegu. Since the bus to get there is quite expensive for the distance, it would be hard to say that the trip is worth the money. However, the Gayasan National Park and the Haeinsa Temple are two of the main South Korea’s highlights. It is a great place to explore in a country where interesting spots are extremely limited.
The Haeinsa temple is one of the most significant and beautiful temple of South Korea. It is noted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Haeinsa temple features over 80000 woodblocks between 1237 and 1248 also known as the Tripitaka Koreana. It is the most complete collection of Buddhist scriptures. The buildings which date from the 15th century are very well preserved.
Standing at 1430m above sea level, the Sangwangbong peak is the highest one of the Gayasan National Park. It is a short 9.6km return hike with a positive 854m. Not only the view from the top is quite nice but the path leading to the peak goes through a dense jungle following a river stream. It is a really pleasant hike!
